Francis Marion National Forest

With more than 250,000 acres of land, Francis Marion National forest protects pine forest, blackwater swamp, Carolina bays and salt marsh northeast of Charleston.

The edge of the forest is just twenty minutes drive from downtown Charleston, and it encompasses the coastal trailhead of the Palmetto Trail.

The hiking can be flat, buggy and muddy, but making your way.

The South Tibwin Hiking Trail is located 12.5 miles past the Seewee Visitor Center and provides 5 miles of looping trails.  Watch out for alligators and snakes.

Hampton Plantation lies within the forest near the Santee River and is worth a visit.
