St. Michael's Episcopal Church
St. Michael’s dominates the Charleston skyline from many points of view with its white steeple. Located at the crossing of Meeting and Broad Streets, the church marks the city center.
Built over the footprint of the original St. Philips Church (1680s), the first Anglican church built south of Virginia, St. Michael’s opened in 1761.
As with much of Charleston’s architecture, St. Michael’s has its share of scars. War, the earthquake and even a tornado have battered this old church, which is the oldest church in the city still in its original form.
Perhaps due to its central location, the church has seen the likes of George Washington and Robert E. Lee.
