Folly Beach

Folly Beach is the only easy-to-reach beach on the south side of Charleston. It has a very laid back feel. The northern end has a great view of Morris Island Lighthouse and is the home of the best surf in SC, a beach called The Washout.

There is nothing frou frou about Folly. This down-to-earth spot is great for hanging out if down-to-earth is your speed. Otherwise, you might look into one of the East Cooper beaches.

Favorite bars and restaurants on Center Street include Taco Boy (recommended), Surf Bar (recommended), Snapper Jacks and the Folly Beach Crab Shack.

The Holiday Inn has a beach-front bar that’s worth a drink or two if you’re looking for an oceanfront cocktail.

Like all of Charleston’s beaches, it’s all the same except for the ends of the island by the inlets and near the town center, which has a little more going on. If you’re looking for that crowded park feel with lifeguarded beaches, check out the county park on the south end of the island.

My personal favorite outdoor spot in the area is by Morris Island Lighthouse on the north end of the island.

If you can’t afford a boat, try fishing from the recently reconstructed Folly Beach Fishing Pier.

If you’re new to the area and you want to surf The Washout on a big day, you’d better be good. There isn’t much room, and there are PLENTLY of people in the water.
