Capers Island

For the adventurous, check out remote Capers Island, only accessible by boat. The breezy inlets and boneyard beaches are pretty wild.

The island’s remoteness keeps the crowds down, and you really get a wilderness experience along with a beach experience.

The beach here is practically a monument for the losses of Hurricane Hugo—tree after decimated tree stand sun-bleached and salt-preserved in a tidal zone that was once coastal forest.

Spring and fall weekends tend to attract the most visitors.  Paddlers should be careful around boats.

Camping is allowed by permit near both of the island’s inlets.  Call the SC Dept. of Natural Resources at (843) 953-9300 for more information.

Capers Island is located two islands north of Isle of Palms between Bulls Island and Dewees Island.

Kayaks usually depart from Wild Dunes Marina (fee) or the small boat launch on the mainland in North Mt. Pleasant at Gadsdenville Rd.
